Favorite Bible Verse:   “If some of the branches have been broken off, and you, through a wild olive shoot, have been grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing sap from the olive root.”  Romans 10:17

Significant Life Experiences that led me to HLCS:  As a young child I attended Sunday School, Church, Church Camps, Youth Activities, all of which helped me form my relationship with the Lord. As I began high school, then college, I drifted away from God, but through my earlier experiences and meeting my wife Vicki who was a believer I rededicated my life to the Lord. Upon graduation from college (1977), Vicki and I begin our life together through marriage and teaching in small schools in Alaska for three years. We then spent the next 25 years working together teaching school on Mackinac Island, and I retired from Boyne Falls Public School in 2010. Also, we had the privilege to help plant the Mackinac Island Bible Church. I served as an elder and Vicki served MIBC in many capacities. Upon retirement the Lord opened doors and provided me the opportunity to serve as the Administrator for HLCS. I believe the Lord has prepared me over the last 30 plus years to serve as the Administrator of HLCS and I count it as a privilege to serve.

I Love HLCS because… we have the opportunity to begin and end every situation we face with prayer and thanksgiving to the Lord and to serve alongside HLCS staff, students, parents, and supporters as we plant seeds with every person who walks through our doors on a daily basis to develop their relationship with the Lord!

Activities & hobbies I enjoy: Spending time with my family, motorcycles, camping, walking, bicycling, exercising, and most importantly learning more about the Lord on a daily basis.

Favorite Bible Verse: I can’t pick out one favorite verse, but my favorite book is Psalms.  It is so full of worship for God and that is my favorite thing to do!

Significant life experiences that led me to HLCS: Hi, I’m Kathy James and this is my 16th year as the Secretary at HLCS. My two oldest children were attending school here and I was working as a Service Manager when God began telling me to come to work at Harbor Light.  I thought He was joking, and ignored Him for a couple months, but He kept at me so one day at church I asked Clark Hewitt, who was Administrator at the time, if there was a job for me at school.  Clark looked at me very strangely because God had been telling him to hire me, and here I am!

I love HLCS because…The very best thing about my job is the kids.  I love them all! Some days it seems most of my time is spent putting on bandaids, getting ice for boo-boos and praying about hurts and headaches.  I have made lasting relationships with many students, and my closest friends are co-workers.

Activities & hobbies I enjoy: I love coming to work here each day.  I also own a cleaning business, take classes at NCMC, and am involved in the children’s ministry dramas at Harbor Light Chapel. God is good-all the time!

Favorite Bible Verse: Romans 8:15 "For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry 'Abba Father'."

Significant Life Experiences that led me to HLCS: I came to Harbor Light because I am a HLCS graduate and wanted my children to have a similar educational experience.

I love HLCS because… it is a family friendly environment where my children's education can be based in the word of God. As a teacher, I love the staff and students and look forward to spending time with them.

Activities & hobbies I enjoy: Outside of school, I enjoy leading worship, playing volleyball, re-decorating my home, and spending time with my family.

Favorite Bible Verse: I love God’s Word so much. It truly is the “lamp unto my feet and light unto my path.” (Ps 119:105) I would be lost without it.  It’s hard to choose a favorite verse but one that is foundational to my life is, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength and love your neighbor as yourself.” Luke 10:27

Significant life experiences that led me to HLCS: It’s been my desire to live for Christ since He entered my heart at age 14. As the years have gone by I’ve come to realize that God is the central goal of my life and of all that I am and do. Becoming a parent caused my faith to deepen as my husband and I looked at our children and realized there is no greater gift we could give them than to know Christ. Choosing a Christian Education for them was part of our desire to raise them for the Lord and we are very grateful to be seeing beautiful fruit because of it. I have a Bachelor of Science degree and worked as a nurse and nurse educator for 17 years, homeschooled our children for six, and then came to HLCS. It’s an honor to serve the Lord in this ministry.

I love HLCS because… I am so thankful for HLCS. Not only does it provide an excellent academic education but it also disciples students in the lasting things, giving them a solid foundation for life and eternity. I believe we are here to live for Christ and to spend our lives investing in others. HLCS invests in the lives of our students every day. It is truly a grace-filled ministry, preparing next generation leaders for Christ.

Activities & hobbies I enjoy: When I am not at work I enjoy spending time with God and His Word, with family and friends, in the beautiful outdoors, reading, worshipping, studying, journaling, hiking and gardening. The beach is probably my favorite place. I serve on the Missions Committee at our local church and with a ministry in Kenya; a place God called me to long ago. My passion is to live for Christ and to see others come to know the fullness of His love.

Favorite Bible Verse:  “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.  As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55: 8-9

Significant Life Experiences that led me to HLCS:  When my oldest daughter was four years old my husband and I toured all of the schools in the Petoskey area and fervently prayed for direction.  We had both come from public school backgrounds.  My father was a teacher in a wealthy school district where all of the ‘bells and whistles’ were available for students.  The Lord very, very clearly impressed on us that we should send Katie to Harbor Light, as different as it was from our school experiences.  Through the years I helped wherever I could, increasing my hours year by year.  Six years ago I transitioned to this full-time position.  Since that first year we have had four children graduate from HLCS and have one still to go!

I love HLCS because… it is God’s heart that every moment of our being we would be focused on him.  To educate our children apart from Him means to dissect our children’s lives in ways they were not meant to be divided.  Courses must be taught with a biblical foundation, students must be seen as being formed in His image and the goals and objectives we seek for students must come from the Lord.  He is the one who created these students and only He can lead and guide us, along with their parents to dream His dream for them and to walk out day by day their growth in Him.  This is my passion and it is the same as the passion of HLCS—that’s why I love it here!

Activities & hobbies I enjoy:  Travel, cultures, mission trips, helping students to walk in their purpose, worship, hospitality, music, my family, cooking, and nature!

Favorite Bible Verse: One of my favorite Bible verses is Isaiah 40:28-31 (NIV). "Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint."

Significant Life Experiences that have led you to HLCS: Our oldest daughter came to us one day and said that she felt she should switch to a Christian school to be closer with other Christians and have more Christian friends. We enrolled her in the middle of her freshman year and she loved it! We planned to enroll our other two children the following year but ended up moving. A year later we returned and put all three daughters in HLCS. They were welcomed with open arms. Harbor Light has made the transition back up north much easier for all of us! I like to be involved with the school and so I volunteered and began doing the Facebook page, then the website and now a position in the office! I love what I do at Harbor Light so much that it doesn't really seem like a "job"! I am really enjoying the encouragement and blessing of working with others who love the LORD and are seeking to glorify Him in their teaching and service. With all our hearts we strive to prepare the next generation of leaders for Christ!

I love HLCS because… of the family atmosphere that is here. I love how the school strives to glorify God in how they teach and how they emphasize families, and encourage church involvement like a stool with three legs (Family, Church, School). The staff is truly committed to helping the students grow in the LORD while also helping them identify their gifts and where God may be guiding them for the future. This is a wonderful place!

Activities & hobbies I enjoy: I enjoy ministering with family and friends as well as studying and teaching God's word. I love working at Bible Camp in the summer and investing in the next generation. I like playing and coaching volleyball and taking picutures!
